This grant gives outstanding candidates the opportunity for a 3-year paid position to carry out a self-designed research project in Communication Science at ASCoR, resulting in a PhD degree in Communication Science from the University of Amsterdam. The 3 vacant PhD projects will start on 1 September 2013.To support candidates in designing and writing their own PhD research proposal, a 1-day master class will be offered for selected candidates in February 2013.

PhD Scholarship 2013 in Systems Biology

PhD Scholarship 2013 Description: Systems Biology discovers the principles underlying the emergence of the functions of Life from molecular interactions. Matteo Barberis and Hans Westerhoff have engaged in such discoveries in areas such as metabolism, the cell cycle, gene expression, sleeping sickness, and signal transduction. This project aims to develop cases where highly different biological dimensions are brought together computationally. One model will connect metabolic, cell cycle and epigenetic networks to whole-body aspects and to nutrition in the context of personalized medicine. A second model will connect temperature stress in an extremely thermophilic Archeon with metabolic black holes and toxicity. A third will connect transcription to protein synthesis to metabolism in the context of rare metabolic diseases. The project is a generalization of the challenge of multi-scale modeling so as to add temporal, organizational, chemical and functional dimensions to the spatial scales.This project will be supervised by Dr. Matteo Barberis and Prof. Hans Westerhoff at the Amsterdam Faculty of Science-location of SILS.

PhD Scholarships in Netherlands 2013 Description: Cell division in bacteria is executed by a large protein complex that comprises more than ten different proteins. How this protein complex establishes cytokinesis is largely unknown. They have identified a new cell division protein, SepF, which is conserved in Gram-positive bacteria and cyanobacteria. This protein makes very large protein rings that bundle the tubulin-like protein FtsZ, the key bacterial cell division protein, into large tubular structures. We have now strong evidence that SepF also anchors FtsZ to the cell membrane. This PhD project will focus on the molecular mechanism of SepF in cell division with the ultimate goal to understand how bacterial cell division works. Since cell division is a promising target for novel antibiotics, this project will also support the development of future antimicrobial compounds, which is important considering the worrying rise in multidrug resistant pathogens.

Students who receive the scholarship will have the amount of the Scholarship posted to their MyUH account 10 days before classes begin; tuition and fee balance will be reduced by the amount of the scholarship. Students who receive the Scholarship in the fall semester do not need to apply again in the spring semester. The scholarship will be renewed from fall to spring as long as the student maintains at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
